Winners of Dorset Tourism Awards, ‘Pub of the Year’ 2020!
To say we are over the (Half) Moon (pun intended!) is an understatement.
We are so proud of our incredibly hard-working & talented team who have helped us take our delivery & takeaway offering to the next level during this lockdown and those last year.
2020 has been a trying year but it gave us chance to strengthen our ties within our local community as they have shown us incredible support. Without their support, and a generous local donor who has asked to remain anonymous, we would have had a very different year. The Lockdown in March gave us time to design a web site which was able to process our customers’ orders to give the best service you could wish for.
2021 begins with another Lockdown!
January 2021 begins rather differently than most. Instead of welcoming in our wonderful regulars & hungry walkers, we are busy behind the scenes as we find ourselves in another Lockdown – unable to welcome you in.
So what are we up to? Having taken down the Christmas decorations, putting them away safely for next year, we are busy looking forward and planning. We have exciting additions to our delivery & takeaway offering and are planning our reopening (when the restrictions allow).
2021 has begun with the announcement that we have been shortlisted for Dorset Tourisms Pub of the Year and we hope this is only the beginning of what will be a great year!
In the meantime, we hope that you are doing your bit to keep yourselves & loved ones safe so that it won’t be too long until you are allowed to visit us once again & enjoy a great pint either by our cosy open fire or in the sunshine in our fabulous beer garden.
Live music and so much more!
Take a look at the Calendar to see what Events we have coming up. We are constantly responding to the latest government guidelines and legal restrictions in regard to COVID-19. Alas, this means our including our specially developed Sunday Session’s – great live music in a safe but fun environment, are currently on hold. However, please check back regularly for updates.

- Looking forward to a brighter 2021
After much planning and working with the government’s roadmap, our intentions are to reopen to the public on Wednesday 14th April. We can’t wait to welcome you all back!
Following government guidelines, we can only allow you to use our wonderful beer garden. Therefore this will be outdoors only. Our team will be busy in the week before we open, putting our marquee up in the garden, this will contain 8 tables available to book in advance. We will have more tables in our garden, which will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis. As per government guidelines, the sides of the marquee will be open so please dress appropriately for the weather. On a cooler evening, please bring a jumper or a blanket (or both) for your own comfort.
Moving to May, following the government roadmap, (hopefully there will be no delays!) we will be accepting bookings from the 19th for seating inside of the pub. Bookings inside the pub (as with outside) will still have to comply with the government restrictions eg. the rule of 6, etc., and table service only.
Hopefully, as long as all criteria are met, from the 24th of June we will be open without restrictions.
We’d like to thank you for all of your support throughout this challenging time & would like to thank you for your co-operation whilst our team find the best way to provide great service during this new way of working.

- The Half Moon Inn Melplash, Winners of Dorset Tourism Awards, ‘Pub of the Year’ 2020
4th February 2021 – The Half Moon Inn Melplash, announced as Winners in Dorset Tourism Awards category ‘Pub of the Year’ 2020. After what has been an incredibly challenging year for the hospitality industry which has seen pubs, bars, and restaurants have to close with little notice repeatedly and then reopen with some of the strongest Covid_19 compliant regulations it is wonderful to have some good news to begin 2021 with.
Jamie Pimbley, Landlord at the Half Moon: “2020 has been a trying year but it has given us chance to strengthen our ties within our local community as they have shown us incredible support. Without their support, and a generous local donor who has asked to remain anonymous, we would have had a very different year. The Lockdown in March gave us time to design a web site which was able to process our customers’ orders to give the best service you could wish for”.
This award means so very much to us and our team, and has made the struggles of the last year all worth while.
Clare Pimbley, Landlady at the Half Moon: “Having only just celebrated our first ‘pub’ birthday days before we had to close for the first lockdown last March, we were very concerned for our future at The Half Moon. 2020 gave us time to spend time with our 3 sons and support them as they began their home schooling adventure. Our second year has seen us transform our business to a pub at home format and we are so proud of our team who have worked so hard to enable this.”
Clare Bushby of headline sponsors Clockwork Marketing says: “The Dorset Tourism Awards are more vital than ever before. They provide normality during a surreal time, where everything seems weighted against hospitality. Equally as important, they give credit—where credit is more than due. Rather than despairing, entrants into this year’s awards have been remarkably inventive when faced with the impact of coronavirus. They have shown, against all the odds, that a pandemic needn’t stand in the way of excellent hospitality. This is in no small part due to their unflinching resolve and unbreakable passion for their industry.
Chair of the Judging Panel Professor Peter Jones adds his congratulations: “Dorset tourism, like tourism the world over, is demonstrating resilience and fortitude in coping with the impact and implications of Covid-19 in some amazing ways. This year’s entries into the Dorset Tourism Awards are no exception. Entrants demonstrated creativity and innovation, passion for the industry, and enthusiasm in providing a great experience for their customers in the most difficult of circumstances.
“To have been shortlisted for Pub of the Year was amazing, to win the Gold award is just beyond what we could have hoped for. We will proudly be displaying our award in the pub to show off to our regulars when the restrictions lift and they can be welcomed back into the pub”
Jamie & Clare Pimbley.
